I am sure you have heard a similar story by now. Julia and Kennon planned for a big wedding in March of 2020, but Covid came and wrecked those plans. Though they didn't get to have the big wedding they originally planned they still got married in March. Love is not cancelled! They had a small backyard ceremony with a couple of family members and their two kiddos present. This blog isn't about that though!
I know Julia from high school and we actually reconnected late in 2019 when I photographed her and Kennon's family! It is still one of my all time favorite sessions and always will be, they are such kind and uplifting humans. So when I saw they had to change their plans around I knew I wanted to reach out and see if they were interested in an adventurous elopement at all. We hopped on a Zoom call and talked about everything, Julia was just as stoked as I was! They made a whole weekend out of the event, rented a nice Airbnb, invited their maid of honor and best man and we did the dang thing!
I arrived to their Airbnb, a sweet tiny home tucked away in the hill country, before the sun. Everyone was getting ready together, I always feel kind of bad when we have to start so early in the morning. I usually expect everyone to be quiet and not really ready to interact with other humans just yet. This was not the case for Julia and Kennon! Though I am sure they still would have loved their sleep. They had a layout of breakfast items, pot of coffee and mimosas on deck by the time I got there.
We all finished getting ready and loaded up in Kennon's truck for the drive to Pedernales. The stoke was high when we pulled up to the parking lot and had the entire place to ourselves! We hiked down to the falls and had a little ceremony, Julia and Kennon had exchanged vows already so it was more of an exchanging of love letters. We spent the next couple of hours exploring the falls, watching the fish and a couple of turtles make their way down stream. Righteous! I made note to bring fishing poles along for the next Pedernales elopement in case anyone wants to give it a go. The forecast actually called for record high temperatures so we made sure to head back to the Airbnb before the heat got unbearable. Back at the Airbnb celebration continued! Dosequis, mimosas and hammock hangs out in the shade. It was perfect!!
There has been a really cool energy about the sessions or elopements I've had the pleasure to photograph after the Covid stay at home mandates. Everyone's just excited and grateful to have some sort of normalcy again, to kick back and tune out for a moment. And in Julia and Kennon's case they got to see some of their best friends for the first time in a while so it was so sweet to be around as all of the excitement unfolded.
Here's what Julia had to say about it all!
"If you want the best photos of your life, choose Nikole Velasco Photography. Our first shoot with her were family photos with our two kiddos. I was super worried they were going to be ‘over it’ within 5 minutes, but I was WRONG. Nikole kept them engaged, made us laugh, and wrapped up right on time. I thought it was fun and maybe we would get a few good ones. Guys — THEY WERE ALL AMAZING. My mind was blown at how great Nikole captured the natural love and laughter between us. Seriously, scrolling through the gallery of photos looked like I was flipping through advertisements of the perfect family. Then we had our wedding set for March 21, 2020... aka the very start of the COVID pandemic lockdowns! I thought for sure everything I had been planning was ruined and I’d never have the beautiful memories of our wedding day. WRONG AGAIN. Nikole is an incredible elopement photographer. She helped us pick a place, she arranged a timeline for us, helped pick out the flowers, EVERYTHING. We had a beautiful ceremony and it almost felt effortless. The memories made were priceless, and when I got the photos back I was SHOCKED. The photos are so breathtakingly gorgeous that I almost can’t even believe they’re of us! Nikole is that good. She’s fun to work with, always kind, always goes the extra mile, and she makes taking these photos feel natural and fun. You will cherish the photos she takes for you for the rest of your life. I cannot wait for the next opportunity to shoot with Nikole."
